COMBS mail

Ask a question to a COMBS researcher!

Inspired by the Munich Center for Quantum Science and Technology (MCQST) Quantum Mail, this is our page where we showcase questions you have asked about our research.

We’d love to hear from you – send us your question via one of our physical postcards when we are at an event.

What are your burning questions? It could be about our technology, what are opportunities and risks? Or what is a day in the life of a researcher like?

What is our technology?

A microcomb is a tiny device that turns a single laser beam into a rainbow of evenly spaced light frequencies.

These ‘combs of light’ can help us sense tiny changes and measure things precisely. It’s cutting-edge physics that’s small in size but huge in impact.

Our researchers are liberating the world’s most measurement tool from the lab, in the hope to transform applications ranging from biomedical imaging, communications, precision measurement and astronomy.

Your questions about COMBS, answered!

Optical frequency combs – the world’s most accurate measurement tool – will be as cheap, readily available and accessible as today’s consumer electronics, and will enable breakthrough science and industrial transformation for broad societal impact.

The optical frequency comb is a device capable of translating electronic signals into light waves.

It was first invented at the end of the 20th century and enabled the most precise measurement the world had ever seen, allowing research that transformed satellite global positioning, and the exploration of distant suns.
